A beautiful and durable car body is the result of careful application of two (or three, depending on the desired outcome) different paint products. From the deepest layer to the outermost, we find:
- Insulating primer;
- Color;
- Clear coat (necessary if the underlying color is metallic or pearlescent).
The primer lays the foundation on which the second layer will be applied, while also isolating it from the substrate, and therefore has a foundational, anchoring, and protective function.
There are several car primer options to choose from.
Wash Primer
Wash primers are solvent-based primers ideal for bare metal: their aggressive formulation provides them with excellent biting characteristics on this material, which is why they are often referred to as adhesion promoters.
Wash primers are perfect not only for touch-ups and panels but also for complete repaints: once the paint product is applied, complete isolation of the metal is achieved, thus allowing for car body painting of any size.
Wash primers are also distinguished by their high corrosion resistance, and their application eliminates lifting, sanding scratches, and swelling.
Epoxy Primers
In the body shop industry, epoxy primers are the primers par excellence, as they combine all the characteristics that lead to beautiful and long-lasting results in a single paint product.
Epoxy primers indeed have very high corrosion resistance and an excellent ability to isolate the underlying surface from the overlying paint product.
These excellent properties are accompanied by the versatility of epoxy primers, as they can be applied to bare metals and used for touch-ups, panels, and complete car repaints, with or without sanding.
Two-Component Universal Insulating Primers
Two-component universal insulating primers are certainly among the most used in the body shop industry because they are highly productive and boast excellent mechanical and wet sanding properties.
Over the years, VOC emission regulations have led to changes in their formulation for greater personal and environmental safety, and today almost all of them comply with these standards.
Two-component universal insulating primers range from white to black with various intermediate shades, and are perfect not only for touch-ups and panels but also for complete repaints.
Two-component universal insulating primers are also distinguished by their high resistance to stone chip damage.
Two-Component Universal Insulating Primers without Sanding
Two-component insulating primers without sanding, or commonly called 'wet-on-wet', do not require, as easily understood from the name, sanding before applying paint over them.
This characteristic translates into an important advantage in terms of productivity:
- Application times are reduced because there is no need to wait for drying and to perform sanding;
- The consumption of paint products is reduced, as less quantity of both the primer itself and the enamel to be applied over it is required due to the low absorption capacity of the insulating primer.
Wet-on-wet insulating primers can be applied directly to metal, but also to plastics, with the addition of appropriate additives.
Like other two-component products, this type of insulating primer has high resistance to stone chip damage.
