Car painting is a process that involves applying multiple layers of paint one on top of the other, and the quality of the final result depends on the care taken during the process and the attention paid to choosing the best products and tools for each stage.
Of particular importance is the outermost layer, which is the most exposed to damage and wear, and which, together with the base coat, determines the appearance of the bodywork: the clear coat.
Clear coats: features
The clear coat is of fundamental importance in car body painting, whether it's a new job or you want to perform a car touch-up to restore it to its original splendor.
First of all, the clear coat for bodywork has a protective function: being the outermost layer, it is subject to scratches, abrasions, atmospheric agents, chemical substances and thermal shocks, and must therefore have a high resistance to these factors.
The car clear coat must also be able to filter sunlight to prevent the pigment of the underlying layer, that of the matte base, from deteriorating due to solar radiation, without however covering the color: it must therefore have particular light refraction characteristics.
But, as they say, the eye also wants its part, and so the car clear coat also has an aesthetic function.
If the matte base gives color to the bodywork, the clear coat enhances it and adds particular visual effects for an excellent result: this is especially noticeable in the case of metallics, because the clear coat allows to achieve a high gloss that makes the color even more sparkling.
Clear coats: the different types
Clear coats can be divided into two macro-categories: single-component, or 1k, and two-component, or 2k.
The single-component clear coat is sold as a spray can for bodywork touch-ups, suitable for enthusiasts who want to periodically intervene on the paintwork.
However, in professional bodywork, two-component clear coat is almost exclusively used, which is mixed with the hardener to obtain higher quality and resistance results.
Another criterion for subdividing clear coats is the solid content, i.e. the quantity of binder and additive compared to the total formulation:
- If it is less than 30%, it is a low-solid clear coat;
- If it is between 30% and 60%, it is a medium-solid clear coat;
- If it is above 60%, it is a high-solid clear coat.
In professional painting, products with a higher solid content are preferred because:
- They evaporate less, improving the quality of the finish;
- They offer greater coverage, thus reducing the amount of product needed;
- They speed up drying;
- They are safer due to their low toxicity and reduced fire risks.
